Burn Awareness Week 2023
Friday, January 27, 2023
Through a partnership of the American Burn Association and local fire and life safety educators the week of Feb. 5th through the 12th will be designated as “Burn Awareness Week”. In the United States the Center for Disease Control reported that in 2020, 276,086 people received medical care for unintentional burn injuries, 91,875 required hospital treatment. Primary causes of these injuries include contact with fire-flame, scalds, contact with hot objects as well as electrical and chemical burns. The theme for this year’s campaign is “Scalds: Hot Liquids Burn Like Fire”. This addresses a common risk from hot liquids, steam or hot bath water. We ask that you use caution around sources of hot liquids. Make sure home hot water is adjusted to a reasonable temperature. Use caution in the kitchen, making sure you have a “kid free zone” around the stove and making sure pot handles are turned inward to prevent accidental contact. For further information please look to the American Burn Association, the Delaware State Fire School or your local fire department.
